Title: Adaptable Bioinformatics Education Components for CIHSEP, Phase II
Description: Bioinformatics is an emerging field that exploits computer technology for solving biological problems. WSU Computer Science department will explore research components associated with clinical practice. The project engages high school science teachers and introduces health careers that will benefit high school students.

Title: Clinical Prototype of a Web-based Tool for Prediction of Lung Cancer Treatment Outcomes
Description: Winona State University Computer Science Department in assistance with Mayo Clinic will continue development of a web-based tool for predicting the survivability of lung cancer patients and treatment outcomes based on a statistical model developed at the Mayo Clinic. Papers will be presented at academic conferences offering CIHSEP national and international recognition.

Description: Minneapolis Community and Technical College will support 20 diverse urban high school students currently enrolled in the Minneapolis Public Schools and Augsburg Academy for Health Careers to prepare for the Nursing Assistant state registry exam.

Title: Computerized Dental Technology in the Educational Setting, Phase II
Description: The integration of computerized dental practice management technology in the dental programs allows the use of technology to reach a broader spectrum of diverse clients in our dental clinic and dental community. With the incorporation of “MedVisor Dental” software, development of patient education sessions will be created.

Title: Evidence to Practice: Phase II
Description: In conjunction with Winona State University and Benedictine Health Systems, phase II of Evidence to Practice will be administered. This project will continue to populate the Evidence to Practice website created in Phase I of the project. Outcome measures related to the three clinical areas of Pain, Pressure Ulcers and Falls will be tracked as part of the evaluation; clinical areas will be expanded to congestive heart failure, pneumonia, acute MI, etc.

Title: Model Program Development for Collaborative Multi-Track Associate of Science Degree in Science/Health Science
Description: Winona State University and Pine Technical College will develop a model and the core curricula for a collaborative associate of science (AS) degree for a pathway from high school through a two year college into a multiplicity of science, clinical lab science and health science degrees at a four year university. Students will assess a series of core courses common to a variety of four-year degree programs to avoid duplication. The project will initially have a rural focus.

Title: Innovative NA and FR/EMT Training: Continuation
Description: Minnesota State Southeast Technical College is working to expand and enhance the Allied Health workforce by providing innovative training in two of the fastest growing occupations in Allied Health: Certified Nursing Assistant and Certified Emergency First Responder. This is in conjunction with their Custom Training and Education Program and will help to increase employer and K-12 engagement in health science education.

Title: Clinical Lab Science: Program Development and Accreditation
Description: Creating a well-trained, flexible and diverse workforce for the health professions, specifically Clinical Laboratory Science is the focus of this project through Winona State University. New clinical site opportunities for students, implementing curriculum changes into the existing class schedule and progressing towards the NAACLS site visit are incorporated into this project.

Title: Increasing Diversity in Nursing Education Plus
Description: Winona State University and Rochester Community and Technical College are working together to create awareness of the opportunity and the need for diverse students in nursing. The purpose of the project is to recruit and retain 10 high achieving diverse high school students from Rochester Public Schools enrolled in the Post Secondary Enrollment Option (PSEO) and into a pilot post secondary nursing program.

Title: Athlete Training/Emergency Health Care Computerized Teaching Modules for Distance Learning
Description: Winona State University departments of (HERS), Physical Education and Recreation (PER), elearning and media services will create 29 on-line teaching modules for the delivery of Athletic Training/Emergency Health Care bandaging, taping and protective wrapping skills. Regional efforts to connect youth, secondary and post secondary levels to this project will bring this innovation to all sectors.

Description: An assessment of community health needs with the Latino/Hispanic and Hmong communities in Southeastern Minnesota is the focus of this project. The design of health literacy materials will be compiled. Identification and priority of the health needs of these communities will be determined.

The health initiative at HEC is comprised of; improved access to health care for HEC learners, health promotion activities for HEC learners, and recruiting minorities into healthcare careers.

Title: Health Science Simulation Bridge Program
Description: The bridge program will develop and target currently certified nursing assistants who are interested in moving up in the healthcare career ladder to a patient care associate position. This Mayo Health System position combines nursing skills with clerical skills within the Mayo Health System clinics statewide. This phase covers marketing and recruiting only—course will be developed and implemented in phase III.

Project: 07-20 (Phase II)
Title: K-12 Outreach Study Group
Description: This project will advance recommendations from the 2006 K-12 study group to replicate their excellent Rochester area outreach in Winona, Willmar and other areas across the state in collaboration with Healthcare Education Industry Partnership, UMN Center for Allied Health, and the states area health education centers. CIHSEP efforts will effectively encourage a larger and more diverse K-12 population to enter healthcare programs of study at the post-secondary level.

Project: 07-21
Title: CCRN Certification, Phase II
Description: This project is phase II from an initial FY 06 project. Phase II will propose course changes included expanding the course content and hours; enroll a greater number of RNs in the course; modify the course so that nurses in progressive care may participate; and make the course available as a nursing elective for RN-BSN nursing students, as well as graduate students pursuing a master’s degree in specialty areas of nursing. Additionally, Mayo Medical Center and Winona Health have already indicated a strong desire to partner with WSU to explore and develop a research proposal that focuses on the interrelationship of nurse competencies and patient outcomes.
