Title: An Innovative Model for Integrating Technological Excellence in a Redesign of an ADN Program
Description: The purpose of this project is to introduce innovative approaches to curriculum redesign and delivery and provide appropriate faculty development to expand use and impact of the redesigned ADN program.

Outcomes: Minnesota State College-Southeast Technical joined in a development collaboration with representatives from both Microsoft Corporation and NuSoft Solutions to create software for use in the nursing programs on both the Red Wing and Winona campuses.

Title: Critical Care Registered Nurse Certification Review Course
Description: The WSU Department of Nursing developed and deployed a 2-semester credit course for practicing critical care registered nurses who are preparing for the adult CCRN certification examination. The target audience is critical care nurses in rural and urban hospitals in Southeast Minnesota and Western Wisconsin.

Outcomes: Thirty six students completed CCRN course; 32 students completed the exam with 31 students reporting their results. Pass rate was at 97%; well above the national average. In FY 2007, the program will continue to expand.

Title: Enhancing the Workforce Through Innovative CNA and First Responder/EMT Training
Description: Southeast Technical's Custom Training Center expanded and enhanced the Allied Health workforce by providing innovative training in two of the fastest growing and high demand occupations in Allied Health: Certified Nursing Assistant and First Responder/Emergency Medical Technicians. They have introduced and delivered easily accessible CNA and Blended e-learning EMT training to a diverse population of high school students and adults.

Outcomes: Number of certified nursing assistants increased from 162 in FY 05 in two locations (Red Wing and Winona) to 232 nursing assistants in 4 locations (Red Wing, Winona, Caledonia, and Wabasha) in FY 06. Additionally, two new rural locations were established at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Wabasha and Caledonia Care and Rehabilitation in Caledonia. Recruitment and training for two new Nursing Assistant trainers for the satellite site in Caledonia. Promoted and marketed new training programs in rural communities. Organized and facilitated community focus groups and formed an allied health advisory committee. Will continue to expand program across southern Minnesota, Western Wisconsin and replicate across state in future years.

Title: Computerized Dental Technology in the Educational Setting
Description: This project allows the dental assisting and dental hygiene programs at Rochester Community and Technical College the opportunity to integrate digital dental radiography and computerized dental practice management and charting into the curricula.

Title: Increasing Diversity in Nursing Education
Description: The purpose of the project is to recruit and retain 10 high achieving, diverse high school students enrolled in the Post Secondary Enrollment Option into an accelerated pilot post secondary nursing program. This accelerated pilot program allows students to complete their Associate Degree in Nursing in two years post high school graduation and their Bachelor of Science in Nursing in three years.

Outcomes: Developed a program of study at RCTC for high achieving PSEO students from Rochester High Schools. Recruitment and screening of potential students who were high school juniors was accomplished; 35 students qualified with two being identified and tracked through this program. Marketing and publicizing this program was completed and administered for upcoming years; growth in students expected for year two.

Title: Phase One: Learning Innovations in Long-Term Care
Description: The Benedictine Health System, the Rochester Community and Technical College, Pine Technical College, Ridgewater, and MnOnline are developing an innovative training program built on simulations/games technology. The simulation/games training program will target registered nursing assistants employed in 34 BHS facilities located in rural and urban Minnesota.

Outcomes: Began the early stages of developing an innovative training program built upon simulation/games technology. Additionally, a contract was signed between Benedictine Health System and Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. This game targets registered nursing assistants employed in 34 Benedictine Health System facilities located in rural and urban Minnesota. Customized simulation/gaming strategies to the profile and learning needs of the long-term care nursing assistant workforce. Game is in the prototype stage and will be ready for testing summer of 2007 within Benedictine Health System

Title: Enhancing Access to Clinical Evidence for Practice Improvement in Rural Long-Term Care
Description: The Benedictine Health System proposes a technology and workforce development project to improve clinical decision-making in its long-term care facilities. Two major strategies will be utilized: (1) development of a website with access to evidence-based health practice resources relevant to long-term care and (2) implementation of a change model with three elements: a subject focus, a method of utilization, and a model of uptake.

Outcomes: Created an informative website identifying health factors related to pain, pressure and falls. Training tools were incorporated to transform the evidence to practice. Training strategies were used in several facilities within Benedictine Health System to deal with issues related to pain, pressure and falls.

Title: Adaptable Bioinformatics Education Components for CIHSEP
Description: The goal of this project is for the Computer Science Program at Winona State University and its partners to provide the Center for Integrated Heath Science Education and Practice with adaptable computer technology education components for supporting health science education and practice.

Outcomes: Two new Winona State University courses were created and curriculum was established relating to Adaptable Bioinformatics. A 2 + 2 program was invented, partnering Rochester Community and Technical College and Winona State University relating to Bioinformatics. A summer workshop for K-12 science teachers was taught. Additionally, within the project components of lung cancer research was developed in partnership with Mayo Clinic.

Title: WSU Clinical Laboratory Science Program
Description: In the new CLS program, WSU will seek its own NAACLS accreditation to meet the national standards for laboratory training and testing. The WSU facility will provide the accreditation standards for students, allowing placement in a much broader base of clinical facilities and affiliations.

Outcomes: This project worked towards the steps necessary for national accreditation for the clinical laboratory science program at Winona State University. Purchased automatic analyzer dedicated to performing twelve different procedures that can be performed individually or as a panel. This includes a total review for all laboratory procedures. Additional equipment purchased towards the advancement of this lab was completed as well as receiving over $40,000 of equipment donated. Networking collaborations were also created and utilized throughout this project; Healthcare Education Industry Partnership, University of Minnesota, Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, and Rochester Community Technical College.

Title: Expansion of Customized Training in Leadership Development
Description: This project is combining and expanding the expertise of the Winona State University Leadership Institute and the Minnesota State College-Southeast Technical Center for Custom Training and Education. The combined resources of these two institutions will be leveraged to expand their current capacities in two areas: (1) to develop the leadership competencies of healthcare employees at all levels of the organization and (2) to prepare employees to implement the Lean in Healthcare program as articulated in the proposal submitted by Dr. Kim Snyder (06-19).

Outcomes: Recognized and researched leadership development within five healthcare employers and their healthcare employees and created a Leadership Development Model for agencies to pilot. Gathered quantitative data on leadership development practices being utilized by other healthcare institutions nationally and statewide. Next step is to develop a business plan and identify and recruit appropriate collaboration in delivery of model.

Title: Professional Development Proposal: Development of a Lean in Healthcare Program
Description: The goals of this program are to maintain and/or increase the quality of healthcare for Southeastern Minnesota constituents first (statewide clients later), give healthcare professionals a common language and process for continuous improvement, provide the knowledge and tools needed to maximize operational resources while creating service alignment to enhance customer value, and enhance leadership skills for healthcare managers to improve communication, build teams, and focus on quality results.

Outcomes: Secured two healthcare clients; Olmsted Medical Center and Madonna Towers. Incorporated Lean projects within these clients and locations. Results included, improving the retention of CNA’s at Madonna Towers assisted living, worked closely to improve patient scheduling, inventory review and lab order accuracy at Olmsted Medical Center. Became members of a Lean Coalition for Continuous Improvement in Healthcare and continue to explore linkage with leadership academy plan.

Title: A Partnership With the Rochester Boys and Girls Club
Description: This project further expanded the partnership between WSU and the Rochester Boys and Girls Club by developing an introduction to health care opportunities and careers. Teaching projects will also include more hands-on opportunities and guest speakers from other health care disciplines.

Outcomes: Created a partnership with the Rochester Boys and Girls Club in promoting and developing recognition for healthcare opportunities and careers among youth. Forty-eight first term nursing students participated in making displays and participating in the event. A healthcare promoting event was planned and conducted with 68 school aged youth participating.

Title: Pathways Academy - Transitioning Healthcare License Academy
Description: The project established a database of requirements for the transfer of licenses and made the information available throughout the state. The database streamlines the process for other individuals with similar backgrounds and goals.

Outcomes: Received additional funds from the 2006 Minnesota Legislature for a one year pilot. Created a pathway for individuals to transfer health related licenses to be successful in Minnesota. Over 40 individuals have worked with the work force center to obtain health related licenses in Minnesota.

Title: Pre-CNA Healthcare Academy
Description: The Pre-CNA Healthcare Academy is preparatory training offered to students who are interested in either entering or moving up a healthcare career ladder. The primary focus of the project is to further develop and implement a community-based model of a Health Career Preparatory Academy targeting low-wage incumbent workers and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds for entry into a higher-skilled healthcare career.

Outcomes: Training is offered to individuals who need extra assistance in preparing for and entering a career in the healthcare industry. The project targets entry level, Certified Nursing Assistants but also facilitates screening of potential students to give them a realistic picture of the opportunities and requirements of working in the healthcare industry. The current model has proven to be very successful and has gained visibility because of CIHSEP and is being replicated to other parts of the state through a Minnesota Job Skills Partnership grant.

Description: This project created a program to help bridge the gap between the experienced of adult healthcare workers and the requirements of college-level classes. The objective is to use simulation for experiential learning to serve underrepresented and incumbent workers

Workforce Development Inc and Riverland Community College gathered data from current Patient Care Associates and supervisors at Owatonna Clinic and Albert Lea Medical Center that was used in the development of the curriculum.

Outcomes: Created a Simulation White Paper on how CIHSEP could move forward with a Simulation Alliance focused on researching the needs and ideas related to simulation and the impact on the healthcare industry. Recommend convening a state-wide alliance and hiring a coordinator to drive the work of the alliance. Its first meeting will convene in March of 2007. This group worked collaborately with the simulation/gaming team to support the development of the gaming tool while better addressing needs of healthcare.

Outcomes: Engaged 11 institutional partners and linked 13 community-based contacts related to health career awareness programs." Researched state and national best practice models for incorporation into the Minnesota area. Partnerships and collaborative efforts were formed with Healthcare Education Industry Partnership, Rochester Area Math and Science Partnership, BioBus, etc. Replication of activity will be implemented in Winona, Willmar, and other state-wide school districts. A part time K-12 coordinator has been hired and will collaborate state wide with Healthcare Education Industry Partnership and University of Minnesota K-12 outreach staff to leverage impact and resources.

Outcomes: Conducted broad review of nationally recognized bridge programs in place to support the successful transition to employment by individuals not currently working in skilled positions.
