Health Career Day Camp, held June 1921, 2007, was a three-day program to present middle school students from southeastern Minnesota the opportunity to explore a variety of health careers. Students were provided information on health careers, access to healthcare professionals, hands-on activities, and a field trip to Olmsted Medical Center, Rochester, MN.
Forty-four students attended the Health Career Day Camp, with many left on a waiting list. Students participated in sixteen different program areas, including Mayo Labs, Mayo Nursing, Mayo Sonography, RCTC Dental, Mayo EMT/G.Cross, Genetics, Dietetics, MOST, Kmart Pharmacy, Bioethics, Sports Medicine, Diversity and Infectious Diseases.
Lauren Davis, Education Coordinator of Boys & Girls Club, Rochester, supervised some of the students in the three-day camp. She said, "The camp was highly informative, effective and a truly wonderful experience. The kids raved about the food and the snacks, and really loved the Dietetics Lab, Sports Medicine, and Paramedic programs.”
Jeff L. Schultz from the Mayo Clinic, provided the EMT/G.Cross session. He praised the event. “I can't say enough about the staff. They were wonderful and very helpful. The groups of students were awesome! They listened well and had great questions. It was a pleasure to be with them all afternoon and take part in the education and growing process”.
Students were asked for their favorite part about camp. Some enjoyed learning about different professions while others enjoyed the hands on activities, going to the OMC, doing the experiments and meeting a new friend. Many commented that they didn't know being a nurse could be so fund and they wished the camp was held all summer.
