Introduction to the HCCC

For high schools without an existing Health Science Program, the HCCC provides a comprehensive, stand-alone course. Easily customizable, it’s also a powerful complement to existing Health Science programs.

The modules can be used for a variety of purposes from career exploration to a foundational course for allied health programs at the Technical/Community College level to on-boarding new employees.

The HCCC consists of seven individual modules or short courses that contain 64 hours of learning and exercises covering:

  • Awareness and sensitivity to clients’ needs including mental health issues
  • Behaviors for success in the healthcare industry
  • Teamwork and communication skills including conflict management
  • Healthcare ethics
  • Healthcare safety and standard precautions
  • Respect for staff and client diversity
  • Legal issues in healthcare

Modules can be packaged as half-credit, 1-credit, 2-credit, 3-credit courses or offered as a single 4-credit course. The HCCC can also be taught as a Pathway to Nursing Assistant.

New Online Version Available by Lease

The HCCC is now available as an online course for your students — or as a supplement to your face-to-face classroom instruction. It’s the same fully developed, 7-module/64-hour course with a final portfolio project.

  • Available in Multiple Learning Management Systems, lessons are created in a program called Softchalk and linked to your course from the “cloud”.
  • Lessons in the cloud are updated yearly — but you can modify assignments, discussions and quizzes as needed.
  • Available by annual lease, contact Anthony Schaffhauser at HealthForce Minnesota for more information.

Nationally Recognized HCCC Exam

NOCTI Assessment Now Available

Faculty from Minnesota State partnered with instructors from Minnesota High Schools to develop a national recognized assessment tool for the HCCC. Designed to let students show what they know, it provides teachers with the data they need to highlight student growth and identify strengths and weaknesses.

The cost is typically covered by Perkins funds for high school and college students. It can be ordered at the National Occupational Competency Testing Institute (NOCTI) website.

The HCCC is aligned to state and national standards including the 2015 Health Science National Standards, the Common Career Technical Core, the federal and state requirements for a pathway to nursing assistant, HOSA-future healthcare professionals competitive events and skills USA.
